1) Make sure your clothes are clean : Wash the clothing thoroughly before storing them. A cycle through a washer and dryer is sufficient for a good cleaning.Grease and food spots might provide a tasty treat for pests so ensuring cleanliness is critical. Any garment including synthetic fibers with a food or body oil stain is susceptible to damage.
Also remember to empty the pockets of all the clothes you're storing before laundering. Yes, even if you've only worn it once. You'll avoid stains that set before you next wear them, these includes invisible ones from perspiration, perfume or beverages. Stains become a food source for carpet beetles and moths, which will eat through the fabric to get to the food
That's also why you should avoid starching clothes before putting them away. The starch not only feeds bugs, it can also weaken the fabric, leading to brittleness and, in a humid environment, it can lead to permanent stains
2) Make sure the area in which your goods are being stored is swept/ vacuumed to remove moth eggs and larvae
3) Clothing and other textile items can be protected by storing them in boxes that have air holes for ventilation or carefully sealed boxes with a moth repellent in the room.
These repellents create vapors that are heavier than air, so they should be placed in the storage area above the items. Do not use them when plastic hangers or plastic buttons, belts, or trim are involved. Plastics may react with PDB and naphthalene and be permanently damaged
4) After storage, air items for a few days before using them to get rid of any odor. If items are washable, launder them before using. DO NOT directly spray clothing or bedding with an insecticide
